چکیده

b one of the main early complaints of cataract patients, even when they exhibit only mild glare. problems as measured by standard tests. is that alare impairs their night driving In order to better measure the patients’~mpair&nt, glare tes?s shouldhclude measurements of the alam effect in conditions more similar to those found in night driving. iirhen driving at night the ambient light is very low, onc&ng headlights present a transient temporal pattern, and the objects of interest often appear initially in the peripheral visual field. Thus, three impottant characteristics of glare in night driving am that the ambient illuminance is in the scotopic/mesopic range, the detection stimulus is in the periphery, and the glare source is transient. Most of the current glare testers measure glare only at photopic levels, and all the glare tests that we know of use only steady smuces of glare with foveal discriminations. We studied all three conditions. Methods: Detection stimuli were presented on a computer monitor, and the glare source was a high-intensity hmgsten bulb. Stimuli were presented at different times following the sudden onset of glare, in the fovea and peripheral visual field. Results: Disability glare effects are stronger in the periphery than in the fovea. The difference between the transient glare effect and the steady glare effect is greater in the periphery than in the fovea. The duration of the transient effect is also longer in the periphery than in the fovea, an: the recovery time from glare is longer in the periphery. Conclusions: Transient glare effects, such as those often encountered in real world, are much stronger than those tested with a steady glare ~muce in the fovea, and even more so in the periphery. Existing glare testers seriously underestimate disability glare effects in everyday life.

Peripheral contrast sensitivity and attention in myopia

Disruption of normal visual experience or changes in the normal interaction between central and peripheral retinal input may lead to the development of myopia. In order to examine the relationship between peripheral contrast sensitivity and myopia, we manipulated attentional load for foveal vision in emmetropes and myopes while observers detected targets with peripheral vision. Peripheral contr...

Sign-dependent sensitivity to peripheral defocus for myopes due to aberrations.

PURPOSE Animal studies suggest that the periphery of the eye plays a major role in emmetropization. It is also known that human myopes tend to have relative peripheral hyperopia compared to the foveal refraction. This study investigated peripheral sensitivity to defocus in human subjects, specifically whether myopes are less sensitive to negative than to positive defocus. METHODS Sensitivity ...

Evaluation of inner retinal function in myopia using oscillatory potentials of the multifocal electroretinogram

PURPOSE Oscillatory potentials have been suggested to arise from the inner retina at the level of amacrine cells and inner plexiform layer and they are thought to provide a non-invasive assessment of inner retinal function. We sought to investigate the response dynamics of the inner retina of adult emmetropes and myopes by analysing the oscillatory potentials of the multifocal electroretinogram...

Transient Axial Length Change during the Accommodation Response in Young Adults.

PURPOSE To measure the degree of transient axial elongation during the accommodation response in emmetropic and myopic young adults. To evaluate the effect of refractive error and accommodative demand on transient axial elongation of the eye. METHODS Axial length of the right eye was measured in 30 emmetropes and 30 myopes, by using the IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA), while ...

Myopes experience greater contrast adaptation during reading

In this study, we investigated whether reading influences contrast adaptation differently in young adult emmetropic and myopic participants at the spatial frequencies created by text rows and character strokes. Pre-adaptation contrast sensitivity was measured for test gratings with spatial frequencies of 1cdeg(-1) and 4cdeg(-1), presented horizontally and vertically. Participants then adapted t...

Visual performance in emmetropia and low myopia after correction of high-order aberrations.

Myopic observers may not benefit to the same extent as emmetropes from adaptive optics (AO) correction in a visual acuity (VA) task. To investigate this, we measured AO-corrected VA in 10 low myopes and 9 emmetropes. Subjects were grouped by refractive error. Mean spherical equivalent refractive error was -2.73 D (SEM = 0.35) for the myopes and 0.04 D (SEM = 0.1) for the emmetropes. All subject...
